Home of the Week: the Venice landmark Lantern House Los Angeles Times

Because our site was split in half by the High Line, we wanted to give the two towers a shared, memorable entrance. The lobby is gently slung between east and west, pierced by the massive steel railway columns and enveloped by our distinctive lantern-like windows. At ground level, retail spaces eschew the overwhelming size of New York’s plate-glass windows. Instead, bay windows wrap the corner site to give human-scaled shops with divisible tenancies.

We developed a special range of brick to give the project a unique patina, paired with careful detailing that includes bullnose edges and real brick soffits. These everyday, robust materials create apartments that feel sturdy and properly built. Lantern House’s location on (or rather around) the High Line provides inspiration for its amenities. The 75-foot saline swimming pool runs parallel to the High Line, while gardens below and on the rooftop echo the greenery of the elevated park. Cozier enclaves within the building include the library, game room, and coworking lounge.

Festival Activities

The pinnacle of enlightened living at Lantern House is epitomized by the exclusive penthouse offerings. Spectacular penthouse views are showcased by full-height three-dimensional corner bay windows and outdoor spaces that offer panoramic views from sunrise to sunset. The residences are defined by soaring, dramatic bay windows, which illuminate elegant yet relaxed interiors. With an average of ten-foot, nine-inch ceiling heights, these radiant, loft-like spaces, designed by March and White Design, pair heritage brick and bronze materials with stone, marble, and the warm patina of oak.

To achieve this, we borrowed the idea of the humble bay window – a detail often found in late Victorian and Edwardian era buildings. Adapting this established motif, we developed a double-height, stacked bay window held between robust brick piers. The three-dimensional windows are freed from corner columns, giving residents spectacular views out of light-filled rooms, as well as a domestic sensibility. 18th St. in West Chelsea, the project includes two buildings situated on either side of the 10th Avenue linear park, at West 18th and West 19th streets. In a neighborhood that vibrates with culture, this formerly industrial swath retains a sense of the community’s innovative and progressive lineage.
